Sue Caul
People and place dominate Sue's practice. Working figuratively, but with a subtle move towards abstraction, she finds considerable beauty in the urban environment, where the new and the old sit comfortably together. She creates suggestive works that evoke both energy and stillness, depicting everyday life in today’s world, with a nod to all that has gone before. There is an unspoken narrative to her pieces as she invites the viewer to invest time and energy into reading them, and to draw their own conclusions.
Sue works primarily in paint. Her subject matter comes from her own photographs of life, architecture, and landscape. With loose, delicate marks in oil and acrylic, and a tendency towards monochrome and muted palettes, her works focus on shadow, tone, and form.
Employing a deep investigative process, and taking time to reflect and rework, Sue produces layered, meditative paintings that blur the boundaries between figure and ground. Texture and surface are important in helping her create atmosphere and a sense of timelessness. She seeks to honestly represent her subject matter, portraying her own visual experience, whilst leaving a degree of ambiguity for the viewer to subjectively interpret.
